Evaluation

Overall I am very happy with how our documentary turned out. However, there are obviously aspects of the pre-production that worked well and others where there was room for improvement. This is the same for the actual production of the documentary itself.
In our pre-production we gathered lots of research on different type of documentaries, this gave us an idea of what type of documentary we wanted to create and how other documentaries were successful.
Are storyboards were one of the harder parts of pre-production to create, this was we weren’t sure what was going to occur during the production. We decided to storyboard the beginning of the documentary by showing the title sequence, the starting interview and the first morning. From then we just had to leave gaps and explain that the camera would be left running to capture any necessary clips for the documentary.
Are contact sheets turned out to be incredibly useful, without them we would never be able to contact all the members of the crew and get everyone on set at the same time. Are contact sheets also included a list of required materials. For our documentary we only needed a camera, a tripod and a microphone, we used our own camera and tripod so the only thing we needed to hire was the microphone. It wasn’t particularly necessary to keep checking what materials we needed because the only three materials we used were always in use during the production.
We managed to stick to our production schedule to a certain extent. We managed to film and edit when we had decided. However, because we couldn’t predict how long our subject would stay awake for, our filming overran and we had to continue filming a day later than planned.
We didn’t use many scripts, but what we did use helped our documentary move at a swift pace. We planned out all the questions for our subject and specialist and answer, and then they gave us their views, opinions and facts on the matter.  One disadvantage of making a documentary like this is that because you have no script, you have no idea what is going to be said, and could quite easily end up with no relative footage. But I believe the questions we used worked well in regards to the production and did help gather footage that was vital for the documentary.

Documentary Outline

Our documentary will start with the fact: ‘On average, a teenager needs between 8-10 hours of sleep to properly function throughout the day’.  This straight away gives the audience an clue as to what the documentary will consist of.
It then fades to Ross, the subject of the experiment, explaining what he will be doing and his opinions on the experiment. After he’s finished, the title the swipe on to the screen and the music will start.
Then we will start the documentary with a Sleep Specialist explain the dangers and potential outcomes of sleep deprivation. She will also explain why it is important for teenagers to get the right amount of sleep.
After the specialist has finished, the camera will be above Ross as he sleeps. The alarm will go off and the experiment will begin. After he has got dressed and eaten his breakfast, the regular physical and mental tests will begin. These tests will be carried out every two hours and the footage with the most shocking and surprising outcomes will be involved within the nine minutes. Therefore eventually ending up with a clear idea of how important sleep is. This can also be visually recognised by graphs and statistics that we calculate by the results of the tests.
The documentary will end when Ross can no longer stay awake, at that point the documentary will be concluded with results of each of the tests.

Documentary Proposal

1.
Topic

The natural effects on an average teenager experiencing sleep deprivation

2.
Important questions that need an answer (three or more)
·        What are the actual effects on sleep deprivation?
·        Do teenagers in comparison to other ages need more or less sleep to function?
·        How the mind functions differ due to a lack of sleep
3.
Three talking heads (who I will interview formally)
·        An organized sleep specialist interview
·        A public opinion to gain overall thoughts
·        Various interviews on the subject (Liam)
4.
Voice-over narration (what I will say about the topic through a narrator)

A series of facts sourced from the internet will be compared to the results in which we receive from our tests. This is to see how relatable our results are with the other facts gathered from the internet, in order to see how farfetched or accurate some of the information on the internet is.
Illustration of what is going on throughout the documentary will be provided in order to supply the viewer with the best possible understanding of what’s going on.

5.
On-location footage (what I will show while narrating)

All footage will be shot within the perimeter of the subject’s house.
A brief list of what will be filmed.
·        Short interview of the subject so that the viewer’s gain an understanding of his personality before the test begins
·        A run around of the setting (caravan at the bottom of the garden)
·

6.
The Twist(something cool to impress audience)

The way we plan the twist is by measuring the reactions before and after the test, in order to highlight the difference in character and function.

7.
How I plan to “get it done”.

By sticking to the documentary outline Jake, Freddie and I plan to make a successful production on sleep deprivation. By including strong facts and statistics we will show the serious side to our documentary, as it could be taken as a joke due to the common nature of this subject.
